When I started to build the habit of publishing something everyday I could imagine myself going through different phases. Starting from being driven by the novelty, sometimes forcing myself, getting used, and eventually feeling that it is something you don't ever question anymore. What I am actually seeing is that I am somewhere between "sometimes forcing myself" and "getting used to it", but somedays it is just I don't question it. So I guess I have to think about these phases again. But there is also another factor I didn't think of at the beginning. When you are living with another person, your significant other, and you can see how her reactions changes towards your new habit. Because I usually write the posts at the end of the day (something that I would like to change) she sometimes feels that my challenge to build this habit is her enemy. At first she supported with the curiosity of the new challenge, then came a phase of "it looks like you don't want to do this", but now it is turning to a phase similar to "don't question it anymore", it simply is. I don't know if there are more phases ahead for the two of us. But this made my thought about how the habit evolves in a different way when you have to make it happen and when your are adapting to it.

It's time to look back at what I have published and done in the last month. These are my notes for the month summary with the different topics I have written about, what days and other notes about additional comments to do. I want to prepare the summary to be mailed not as another blog post but as something that can be seen quickly so each reader can go directly to point is most interested. I value the time of the subscribers and I don't want to make them go through every different thing I like to do or write about.
At the beginning of this year I was doing a experiment for about a week in which I logged the "values" for different internal states each half an hour. That helped me to draw some conclusions about how my motivation, energy and creativity works. But I don't think the experiment is over. Some of the things I logged weren't clear nor interesting enough so I have been thinking about what could be interesting to look at. Additionally I am interesting on what you have to say about which of the following internal states do you find more useful to learn something new about yourself. Because I have a very small audience interesting data can take a while to gather. If you are interested in the results tell some friends to answer the poll. You can also subscribe to the newsletter as I will tell in the monthly summary whenever I see some meaningful data.
Yesterday, Sunday, I didn't publish anything here. I broke the chain. What I am going to do now? You are going to break your habit at some point This quote is from the article Want to Create a New Habit? Get Ready to Break It which I read when deciding to write here to build an habit. I took most of the ideas from there.
Dinning out, drinking wine and good conversation make braking the chain a valid option. Today I kept writing a bit more. The ideas are now flowing and I am rushing into carefully writing them and enjoy while it last. I will be able to catch it from where I left it the next time a motivation peak comes (for this particular project). I have aslo been reading "Clash of kings" today.
Right now is not the best moment for me to write today's post. Specially if a want to start doing more interesting and meaningful posts. This is why I want to try doing work on batches, using more efficiently the energy of each moment. I have been quite analytical today and I have been thinking more in terms of processes and methods. I have written down some notes about this and I will go deeper into the concept and preparing a way to present them in an interesting way. Right now there are some things that I want to make that I am procrastinating a bit. Anyway whenever this happens I am still bit productive thanks to the task management system I use. Which is by the way the "final version" by Mark Foster (I don't like the name a bit! It's neither descriptive nor charisma). I was previously using Auto-focus, also by Mark, so I sometimes keep refering to my list as the Auto-focus list.
Some people say it takes 21 days to build an habit, and today I am reaching that milestone. Will I continue posting day after day without breaking the chain? Soon I will write a review about how I have been living building the habit. And I will also send the monthly summary in the next days. If you want to receive it sign up at the sidebar form. Having a blog, writing and publishing everyday has been something that have been in my head for a lot of years. But I have always failed on keeping the stream of content when I tried. Now I feel that it has been very easy and I think having a motivating goal behind it has been the key.
If you want to have fun helping (this is a non-profit, free and open project) you are welcome to give a hand giving advice, rewieving the script and the plans, and if you live near Bristol helping with the actual shooting. Just comment or drop me a line.
